Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis is a long term skin condition which affects the skin’s ability to hold moisture. The condition is also often called “Atopic Eczema.” It causes intense itching and the appearance of rashes. The effects of Atopic Dermatitis are usually visible and dominant on some parts of the body like the cheeks, elbows, and knees. “Atopic” literally means allergy conditions, and “Dermatitis” means swelling of the skin.

Anyone can acquire Atopic Dermatitis. Yet, it is mostly common in babies and children. Its specific cause is still unknown up to now. Hence, it is likely caused by both genetic and environmental factors.

Symptoms:

• Dry and itchy skin

• Redness or inflamed skin (caused by scratching)

• Tiny bumps which ooze fluids and crust over

• Tough and thick skin

• Rashes on the face, elbows, and knees, and on the hands and feet

Diagnosis:

A specialist does a physical exam and asks about the medical history of the patient. Thus, the doctor may advise allergy testing done by immunologist or dermatologist. This is to find the causes which trigger the rash.

Irritants which trigger the itchiness of the skin:

• Wool or manmade fibers

• Dust mites or animal dander

• Soaps and detergents

• Stress

•Weather changes

• Allergic reactions to certain foods such as eggs, peanuts, milk, wheat, fish and soy products

Treatment:

There is no definite cure for Atopic Dermatitis. Treatments for Atopic Dermatitis are more on managing its symptoms. Some of them are;

• Sufficient hydration to skin

• Topical corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone

• UV radiation exposure
